"This is the forest primeval. The murmuring pines and the hemlocks,
Bearded with moss and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight."

(From 'Evangeline', a poem by Longfellow. Centered around the forced removal of the French Acadian people from Nova Scotia to Louisiana.)

Opening stanzas of a poem I learned in the 8th grade. Little did I know that six yrs. later, I would be traveling through Louisiana on a military bus to school in Mississippi.
From the bus window, moonlight cast shadows on the trees and there and then I saw the mossy beards drooping from the hemlocks.
